What you get
The zone number and latitude band, for example 43R; the hemisphere; the zone's central meridian; the EPSG code for WGS84 UTM in that zone; the easting and northing of the point; and how far you are from the nearest zone boundary. For points in India the panel also names the state and links to its entry in UTM zone of every Indian state.
Three ways to pick a point
- Click the map. The pin moves to wherever you click; drag around a boundary to see the zone change.
- Search a place. Type a town, district or landmark. Results come from OpenStreetMap through the Photon geocoder.
- Paste coordinates. Decimal degrees or DMS in the same box, in either order with hemisphere letters. The link in your address bar updates so you can share the point.

Frequently asked questions
How is a UTM zone worked out?
Zone = floor((longitude + 180) / 6) + 1. Each zone is 6° of longitude wide and its central meridian sits 3° inside its western edge. The finder applies the same formula, plus the official exceptions around Norway and Svalbard.
What does the letter after the zone number mean?
It is the 8° latitude band from the military grid reference system, C in the far south to X in the far north. Letters N and above are in the northern hemisphere. India spans bands P, Q, R and S.
Which EPSG code should I use?
For WGS84 UTM, 32600 plus the zone number in the northern hemisphere and 32700 plus the zone in the south. Zone 43N is EPSG:32643. The finder shows the code for the point you picked.
My site is close to a zone boundary. Which zone do I use?
Either split the site by zone, or project the whole site into the zone that holds most of it. UTM stays accurate enough for a degree or two beyond its edge. Write the chosen zone into every drawing and coordinate table.
Which UTM zones cover India?
42N to 47N, from the Gujarat coast to eastern Arunachal Pradesh. Fifteen states and union territories sit inside one zone and twenty-one are crossed by a boundary; see the state-by-state page linked below.
Does the search send my coordinates anywhere?
Place-name search goes to the Photon geocoder (OpenStreetMap data). Coordinates you paste and points you click are computed in your browser and never leave it.
